Education

Re-Creation Retreat uses the virtual high school, Park City Independent, which is accredited by the North Central Association of Accredited Schools. Park City Independent is a fully-accredited, private, year-round online High School open to students in the U.S. and around the world. Students attending PCI have the same benefits of attending and completing courses at a public school with the added benefit of attending a virtual campus from the convenience of our Re-Creation Retreat classroom at their own pace.

Through a complete educational process that combines both "Formal Academics" and "Life Skills" education each student learns the tools necessary to live a successful and fulfilling life. They learn to take pride in their accomplishments and they learn to work with others in home, workplace, classroom and community settings.

Formal Academics

During the orientation period of the student's stay they will be assessed and assigned an IAP (Individual Academic Plan). Each student's IAP is tailored to their specific needs. Assessment includes review of school records, therapeutic assessments, personal interviews and input from parents and family counselors. The student's educational and career goals are taken into consideration where appropriate.

A state accredited teacher is assigned to work one-on-one with the student to accomplish the goals set out in their IAP. Course completion is based on mastery of course objectives rather than "seat time". By working with the teacher in a one-on-one setting the student is able to "make up for lost time" due to lack of performance in their prior academic setting and students are able to graduate and attend local formal graduation ceremonies receiving their High School Diploma. Curriculum includes Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Language Arts, as well as a variety of other core and elective course subjects. Because we utilize a one-on-one student/teacher setting, each student can begin their course studies immediately upon enrollment in our program.

Life Skills

Learning Life Skills and developing a healthy work ethic is vital to the student's progress in the program as well as being necessary for the student to be successful later in Life. As part of their Life Skills education each student is given instruction in many areas.

• CPR/First Aid Training
• HIV/Aids Awareness
• Proper Food Handling & Preparation
• Nutrition
• Money Management
• Communication Skills

Counseling at Re-Creation Retreat is a collaborative approach. Therapy also involves program directors, necessary staff, and parents or guardians.

We use the "Why Try" program. The Why Try, www.whytry.org program teaches youth that "yes" it is worth trying hard in life. It offers real solutions and presents these solutions in a way that the youth can both understand and remember. The program teaches self esteem and stresses that although making good decisions can be difficult; doing so will help give the youth more opportunity, freedom and self-respect.

Our "Cognitive and Realistic" approach teaches youth how to process and focus on solutions to their problems to convert challenges and anger into positive motivation.

Student and parents will have to complete therapy assignments before moving on to the next therapy phase. The positive approach to youth development is not about crisis management and not about stopping or preventing problems. However, the program is about investing wisely in our youth, increasing their exposure to positive, constructive activities, and instilling values and skills that will guide them the rest of their adult lives.

Therapy will focus on External and Internal Assets:

• Family Support
• Positive family communications
• Service to others
• Adult role models
• Positive peer influence
• Creative activities
• Caring
• Equality and Social Justice
• Integrity

• Responsibility
• Planning and decision making
• Interpersonal competence
• Cultural competence
• Resistance skills
• Conflict resolution
• Personal Power
• Self-Esteem
• Sense of purpose
